SHORT DESCRIPTION:
NATIONAL OPERA COMPLEX is an on-going project/multimedia body of works exploring power, culture, and resistance. The single-channel video is embedded within a merchandise booth resembling a tourist souvenir kiosk, critiquing the commodification of cultural identity. Blending traditional Thai folk dance with revolutionary music, the work examines how media and state propaganda manipulate cultural forms. It references nationalist leader Plaek Phibunsongkhram’s use of the Ram-vong dance for state control, juxtaposing it with protest songs across five fictional chapters. Styled as a “TV-PSYOP” program, the video merges dance tutorials, news broadcasts, and historical archives to explore how sound and movement shape the ideology, challenging the viewers to reflect on how cultural heritage is packaged and sold, questioning the role of soft power in shaping the notion of national identity.
